Hernando
de Soto, in 1541, was among the early European explorers to visit the territory.
It was a Frenchman, Henri de Tonti, who in 1686 founded the first permanent
white settlement - the Arkansas Post. In 1803, the area was acquired by
the US as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
Arkansas was admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836 as the 25th State. |
The Arkansas counties outlined in yellow are counties where the Wimberly/Wimberley family migrated from other states or territories of the United States. The counties of Union, Calhoun, Lincoln, Drew, and Ashley were mostly settled from the Wimberly family that originally migrated from Georgia to Mississippi and finally to Louisianna. The counties of Polk, Montgomery, and Clark were mainly settled by Wimberlys from Polk County, Tennessee. |
